REVIEW:
Donoor’s Curse by Sharath Komarraju is a true- blue thriller set in a quaint little village in Andhra Pradesh.
Dev (Devdutt Pathak) is a debarred doctor who lives in his own world accompanied by bottles of liquor. The sudden death of his godfather Jahangir Khan forces jolts him out of it. Jahangir leaves behind figurines of twins which leads him to the mysterious village of twins – Donoor. The village is filled with twins. It is a belief that women drinking water from the well are blessed with twins. What does this village have to do with Jahangir’s death? Dev embarks on a chase which involves demons, both inner and outer.
The story was nothing short one big roller coaster ride. I hated reading the first few pages of the book and simply wanted the story to move on, but as the story progressed, I was quite engrossed. The story is actually inspired by a news article that the writer came across. He seems to have done his research quite well. With such research and a convincing sense of imagination, the story was one absolutely thrilling read. The characterization was perfect. The writer needs to be particularly lauded for breathing life into even the supporting characters.
The USP of this particular writer I belive is his writing - reminds me of RK Narayan’s writing - Simple narratives with the right amount of importance to background setting and characterization. In an age where writers use plenty of local language to bring that “Indianized” feel, this writer has done that effortlessly with minimal usage of non-english words. The story, though in English, gave me the sense of reading a story in my native language.
