#274 : Guest Post : Women in Agony by Sundari Venkatraman

Women seem to have been in agony through our mythologies and the pages of our history. There was Sita who was kidnapped by Ravana and was left to fend for herself in the Asoka Vatika. Then there was Draupadi who was almost raped by the Kauravas that too with her many husbands watching on. Then there were Damayanti and Menaka and Rati.

Rani Padmini of Chittorgarh immolated herself in a pyre to avoid being taken away by Allaudin Khilji. Then there was Jodhabai who was married to Emperor Akbar despite her protests. This one at least turned out to work well with her becoming the mother of Jahangir, the next Emperor; and also being the longest ruling Hindu Queen in the Mughal period.

Could this be because our tolerance levels are high OR maybe, just maybe it’s because we have the stamina to face trouble headlong and come up aces?

Coming to my heroine in The Madras Affair, Sangita hasn’t had a happy life. Being raped by her husband – well, our law doesn’t have anything to say about it – and not getting any support from her parents, she has the devil’s own time coping with her life. Despite that, she decides to live her life day by day when she finds out she’s pregnant, in charge of a new being growing within her.

She finds solace during the times her husband Giridhar leaves her alone to visit his mistress. She’s beyond caring when he besmirches her character.

Sangita is strong and refuses to be cowed down. Though she doesn’t argue much, she has a fiery spirit.

And then, what’s a story that gives no hope? So my “woman in agony” needed to find paradise. And that’s why Gautam enters her life.

Sangita doesn’t forget her trauma after she finds happiness. She sets out to improve the lives of other women in similar circumstances and that’s the quality I truly admire in her – how she turns her pain into something truly positive.

Sangita Sinclair was not always this successful & passionate lady, heading the NGO “Penn Urimai” for downtrodden, abused and homeless women….

When Sangita catches the eye of Gautam Sinclair she is a simple, homely girl; utterly unaware of her charms & capabilities. She has the devil’s own time in overcoming her inhibitions, hesitation, and her family’s orthodox and outdated rules before recognising her love for Gautam.

Will Gautam be able to solve Sangita’s Dilemma or will she be forever trapped in her past?

Meet Sangita

Sangita has been battered by life. She’s been a victim of marital rape and is widowed after barely a year and a half of marriage. Though her husband’s death brings her relief from one end, it brings forth another set of problems. She’s a widow now and is made to suffer for it as if it’s her fault that her husband died in a drunken accident.

But does this situation faze Sangita? Not at all! With a three-month-old son to bring up and with her mother howling her heart out at every opportunity, Sangita braves her way through life until Gautam walks into the hospital she works in.

Young and beautiful, Sangita catches Gautam’s eye from the first moment. She isn’t averse to him either. But will her extreme aversion to men let her find new love?

Read The Madras Affair to find out if Sangita gives up her inhibitions to get together with Gautam.

Meet Sundari Venkatraman

Growing up on a heavy dose of fairy tales and comic books, Sundari fell in love with the ‘lived happily ever after’ syndrome. It was always about good triumphing over evil and a happy end.

Soon, into her teens, Sundari graduated to Mills & Boon romances. And that got her thinking – how about such breezy romances in Indian settings? Her imagination took flight and she always lived in a rosy cocoon of romance over the years.

Then came the writing – a true bolt out of the blue! Sundari had just quit her job as a school admin and was taking a break. She was saturated with reading books. That’s when she returned home one evening after her walk, took some sheets of paper and began writing. It was like watching a movie that was running in her head – all those years of visualising a perfect Indian romance had to be put into words. The dormant romantic storyteller in her finally found its calling and The Malhotra Bride was born. While she felt disheartened when publishing didn’t happen, it was her husband who encouraged her to keep writing.

In the meanwhile, she landed a job as copy editor with Mumbai Mirror. After working there for two years, she moved to the Network 18 Group and worked with two of their websites over the next six years, as content editor.

Despite her work schedule, she continued writing novels and short stories and had them published in her blogs. She also started blogging voraciously, writing on many different topics – travel, book reviews, film reviews, restaurant reviews, spirituality, alternative health and more.

Her first eBook Double Jeopardy – a romance novella – was published by Indireads and has been very well received by readers of romance.

In 2014, Sundari published The Malhotra Bride (2nd Edition); Meghna; The Runaway Bridegroom; Flaming Sun Collection 1: Happily Ever Afters From India (Box Set) and Matches Made In Heaven (a collection of romantic short stories) in form of ebooks.

#272 : Blood Rose Angel by Liza Perrat : Review

Picture

ENRE: Fiction

NUMBER OF PAGES: 349

FORMAT: Digital

SERIES / STANDALONE: The Bone Angel Series #3

HOW I GOT THIS BOOK: Review copy as a part of France Book Tours

REVIEW:

Historical Fiction is always a pleasure to read if the writer has a way with words. The story when written properly would have the potential to transport the reader to the period in which it is set. Time travel otherwise isn’t technically possible. I experienced that absolute bliss of time travel with this book.

Midwife Heloise, born a bastard, heals and tends to childbirths in her small town. Taunted by her status as a bastard, she resolves never to give up on her profession of healing and swears an oath on her mother who was a healer/midwife herself. Married to a handsome stonemason, Heloise’s future looks blissful until the gory disease of pestilence threatens to wipe out France. Fearing death, Heloise’s husband prohibits her to treat any pestilence patients. Torn between her husband and the oath she swore, Heloise is forced to make a choice - A choice that ultimately ends up impacting the life and death of her village folks.

With flawless and progressive characterization and each characters emoting to dot, the story was simply magnetic. I had to finish the book off! The writer managed to show all possible shades of a character along with all possible emotions. That is one absolute rarity these days. For some reason, writers tend to “write” actual history and facts in the middle of the story if the story in such a background. That is absolutely boring and results in one huge drop in the pace of the book. Thankfully, this writer really did no such thing. Of course, there was a bit of “history” but it was totally in context and essential to understand the story line. To satisfy history buffs who expect historical facts, the writer had an appendix that talked about the time period of which this story was set in. That made an interesting read for me. It is needless to mention, the writing was fluidic and simple. The only peeve point I had was with the pace of the story midway. I felt she gave too much importance to gory deaths that the pestilence caused, but however, I later felt that she did only to emphasize what risk Heloise was actually taking.

MY SAY: The perfect historical fiction!

RATING:

PLOT: 8/10

CHARACTERISATION:9/10

NARRATION:9/10

BOREDOM QUOTIENT:1/10(lower the better)

OVERALL RATING: 9/10
