#202 : Online Talk! - In Conversation with Sophie Weiner - Translator - Thecollector by Anne-Laure Thiéblemont

Revisiting Paris

Sophie Weiner is a freelance translator and book-publishing assistant from Baltimore, Maryland. She has translated several books for the mystery and thriller publisher Le French Book. The most recent one is the art world mystery novel, The Collector by Anne-Laure Thiéblemont, which just came out in English. Here, she answers some questions about the experience.

Q: What got you excited about taking on this translation?

A: Before even reading The Collector, I was excited to be doing my first translation of a book written by a female author for Le French Book. And then to discover a complicated yet relatable main female character was a bonus. I felt a connection with Marion’s relaxed and understated fashion sense, her love of swimming as an anti-stress exercise, and her attraction to this opportunity for adventure as an attempt to not only spice up her mundane routine, but to test her own limits. I also enjoyed re-visiting certain arrondissements of Paris that I was familiar with through my three-year stint in the City of Light.

Q: What did you learn about the translation process with this project?

A: I’m learning to accept larger leaps in variations from the original text as long as a) the author approves of the change and b) such a change ultimately better serves the target readership.

Q: What was challenging about translating this book?

A: Since the story is told largely through the perspective of an art history graduate with a keen eye for detail, scenery descriptions are elaborate with great attention paid to a room’s décor, furniture, objects, and the like.

Le French Book

Some people collect art, others collect trouble. Marion Spicer spends her days examining auction catalogues and searching for stolen works of art. She is a top-notch investigator when it comes to eighteenth-century art. But for her it's just a job and her life is well ordered. All this changes when she inherits a prestigious collection of pre-Columbian art from a father she never knew. There are conditions attached: she must first find three priceless statues. Her father’s death sparked much greed, and Marion finds herself facing the merciless microcosm of Paris art auctions and galleries, with its sharks, schemes, fences, traps, scams, and attacks. Her quest draws her into a world where people will kill for a love of beauty.
